Wind energy expert Andrew McMurrey visited Swaziland to investigate the country’s potential for wind energy. The findings included the highest wind speed being recorded in Siteki in the Lubombo region. McMurrey said this is the only suitable place in the country where a wind farm may be constructed.
And while constructing a 10-MW wind farm with a 19% capacity factor would be beneficial to the region, financing could be problematic. The country already has low electricity tariffs, and will require outside investments in order to being construction.
Wind for energy generation is too expensive for Swaziland and therefore must rely on solar and biomass as its means of diversifying the energy mix. However, McMurrey told residents that by 2020, the country will have a 60 MW wind farm along the Lubombo plateau.
