Tanzania Calls on Wind Investors

Tanzania wants to up its wind energy production to meet local energy demands and has begun looking for potential investors to help off-grid areas connect to the national grid.

The companies would supply and install wind turbines producing a minimum of 2 MW to 10 MW and the government will offer a $500 subsidy for every customer that signs up. The project, located in Makambako, will be a JV among three firms: local company Sino Tan Renewable Energy Ltd., MCC 20-Hainan International out of China, and Norwegian company Norks Vind Energi.

“All project developers must provide information indicating that they are qualified and have financial capability to execute the energy project,” Dr. Lutengano Mwakahesya, Director General of Rural Energy Agency (REA) told The EastAfrican.
