East Africa has another geothermal development company as the Tanzania Geothermal Development Co. (TDGC) has officially kicked off operations. The newly established firm, a subsidiary of the utility Tanzania Electric Supply Co. (Tanesco), hopes to help the country tap its geothermal energy sources.
TGDC’s first target is to generate 4 GW of geothermal power within two years. It has already started exploring the Lake Ngozi region. “We have huge potentials in geothermal since Tanzania has the largest share of the East Africa’s Rift Valley system. I should admit that we have delayed to make use of this opportunity,” Minister of Energy and Minerals Prof. Sospeter Muhongo said.
