President John Magufulio of Tanzania revived discussions on the potential of the Stieglers Gorge hydroelectric power plant. The plant has been on the books for some time, starting back in the 2000s, but no firm action was seen.
If the project bears fruit the hydroelectric plant would be able to generate 2,100 MW of power. The power generated would help to power Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
According to President Magufuli, work is currently underway to ensure the development in partnership with Ethiopia.
Activities on Stieglers Gorge hydroelectric power plant development began as part of the activities of the Rufiji Basin Development Authority (RUBADA). The authority announced in 2006 it was seeking funding to conduct work on the project. Discussions were even initiated in 2010 with Brazil to ensure the construction of the plant. But since then, there has been no movement on the project.
The cost of infrastructure development was estimated at $2 billion.
