Rex Investment Ltd.’s subsidiary, Rex Energy, has come onboard to help Tanzania get its solar project off the ground in the Kigoma region. Financed by the US development agency Millennium Challenge Corp. (MCC), the initial installation has already started including a secondary school, dispensary, Vitale Health Center, and Msimba Village Market.
Kigoma was waiting on the Malagarasi Hydropower Project to help meet its power demands, but the project was stopped after results from an environmental impact assessment. However, the area is connected to the national grid which is serviced by Tanzania Electric Supply Co. (Tanesco) mostly via diesel generators.
The Kigoma Solar Project aims to provide power for residences, businesses, government facilities, etc. and is anticipated to be complete in 2013. MCC resident country director Karl Fickenscher said, “The goal of the program is to develop all of the elements necessary for a successful solar PV economy in Kigoma.”
