Thailand’s Solar Market Heats Up

Companies like Suntech are getting geared to potentially pump more funds into Thailand’s solar energy market.  Company CEO Shi Zhengrong expects a final decision to be released for an initial investment of $20 million while also potentially looking into partnering with local firms like Bangchak Petroleum plc.

Thailand hit number two in Suntech’s arsenal for 2010, just after Australia. The company operates in 30 countries and continues to expand with a combined turnover expected to hit $3.5 billion this year alone. The company’s goal is to have 5,000 MW of solar capacity installed in 80 countries, according to Dr. Shi.

Currently, Suntech has supplied solar cells producing 38 MW for the Bangchak project which will be fully operational by early November. The Thai government is also expected to establish a renewable energy policy within the next few months to help further its green grown.
