Total South Africa added renewable energy products to its consumer goods available in South Africa. The Awango range of solar lights comprises three products, ranging in price from around $14 to $200.
The mid- to upper-level solutions are able to charge smartphones and also includes a built-in battery that can store the solar energy. Total said that the products were a social business with lamps priced only to cover the production and distribution costs. Company managing director and CEO Christian des Closières said that Total had managed to get duty free on the product and were using its existing network to distribute. He said, “At each stage we try to minimise the cost so that it arrives at the beneficiary at the lowest possible cost.”
