With the second round of bidding finished as companies jumped at the chance to procure renewable energy projects within the country, South Africa could be facing a larger problem.
The country has still yet to have a functioning IPP in place, and delays in implementing the mechanism is rocketing costs. In addition, the state-owned utility Eskom has slacked on spending the appropriate amount of money on much needed maintenance. The utility allocated $1.22 billion for maintenance and repair on power plants, but Eskom only spent a little over around $931 million.
