Ernst & Young has released its Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices which have Tunisia appearing on the list for the first time. The firm said that emerging markets are the driving force of investment in renewable energy as developed countries focus on reducing costs and slowing demand. The balance of power is in the process of moving to places like the MENA region.
This is an indicator that despite Tunisia jumpstarting the Arab Spring, investments seem to be abound in the North African country. One large-scale renewable energy project, the Desertec Industrial Initiative, announced that while it is tackling Morocco first, Tunisia would be the next country to begin harnessing solar power from the Sahara desert.
Tunisia is also being eyed by France for a similar project to Desertec. The countries signed two MoUs on July 4 for collaboration on the development of electrical networks from North Africa to Europe.
