The UAE continues to invest more in Africa and with the Dubai Expo 2020, the country highlighted two social initiatives that the UAE is working on in Africa to help foster sustainability.
Under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, Dubai is building its Expo 2020 bid on three sub-themes representing the forces that inspire global development. The first theme, sustainability, focuses on lasting sources of energy and water. Next up is mobility, incorporating smart systems of logistics and transportation. And finally presented is opportunity, which leads to new paths of economic development.
The expo will feature Ghana’s Toyola Energy, which manufactures and sells energy efficient cookstoves. Although the cookstoves use standard charcoal (there are solar cookstove initiatives throughout Africa), it is 40% more efficient than traditional stoves which decreases the amount of charcoal necessary to cook. Currently the company’s cookstove has reached 35,000 households, selling over 100,000 units.
Another initiative presented at the conference will be Solar Sister. The program enables women to start their own green businesses. According to the organization’s website, Solar Sister has reached three African countries (Rwanda, Sudan, and Uganda), 107 entrepreneurs, and helped 4,360 people benefit from solar lighting. The company says, “When you invest in a woman, you invest in the future.”
