The Uganda Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd. (UETCL) announced that power tariffs would increase this month. This announcement comes after the country’s parliament unanimously voted to end its power utility, UMEME’s contract with South Africa’s Eskom. The final decision will soon be made the cabinet.
UETCL’s spokesperson Kenneth Otim said that the increase would be in line with the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA)’s proposal to implement the Automatic Tariff Adjustment (ATA) in April. With this tariff hike, the transmission company will get revenue to pay thermal generation firms while also avoiding load shedding.
