Uganda is looking to extend its national grid under the rural electrification program with plans to construct 10 mini-hydropower plants. The Uganda Energy Credit Capitalization Co. (UECCC), a state-owned company using funds from the Dutch ORIO Infrastructure Fund, will construct the mini-hydro power plants.
Each of the power plants will generate between 1-1.5 MW of electricity and will be developed in two phases. The first phase will include the feasibility studies conducted by Royal Haskoning which are expected to get underway in February followed by the development phase. Once completed, the project is expected to connect electricity to 340,000 households and spur social-economic growth.
