At the end of July, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni presided over the start of the construction at the Isimba hydropower dam. Also attending the launch of construction was the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Zhao; Energy Minister, Irene Muloni; State Minister for Energy, Hon Simon D’ujanga; the State Minister for Lands, Idah Nantaba and Finance Minister Hon Matia Kasaijja.
The 183-MW dam is part of what the president described as government’s master plan to spur economic growth through the increase of energy production in the country.
The dam, whose first turbine is expected to be in operational in December 2016, is likely to significantly reduce power tariffs once put on the national grid.
