UN FOUNDATION’S ENERGY ACCESS PRACTITIONER NETWORK AND US GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES TO HOST BRIEFING ON PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA’S POWER AFRICA INITIATIVE
The briefing will take place in conjunction with the 69th UN General Assembly session and the UN Climate Summit.
WHAT: In conjunction with the 69th United Nations General Assembly session, which opened at the UN Headquarters on September 16, and the UN Climate Summit on September 23, the UN Foundation’s Energy Access Practitioner Network and the United States government’s Power Africa ‘Beyond the Grid’ initiative are hosting “Towards Universal Energy Access: 2014 Policy and Practice” to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, government, policy-makers and technical experts in a discussion on advancing energy access "Beyond the Grid".
BACKGROUND: On June 3, 2014, the United Nations Foundation, along with 26 other founding partners, became a partner in "Beyond the Grid", an innovative program for decentralized energy under President Barack Obama’s Power Africa initiative. "Beyond the Grid" will leverage partnerships and direct investments of at least $1 billion into off-grid and small-scale solutions in sub-Saharan Africa. These private sector commitments will help Power Africa meet and exceed its commitment to provide access to 20 million new connections for households and commercial entities, providing electricity to millions of households in sub-Saharan Africa.
