The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the operational unit of the Austrian Development Cooperation, have signed agreements to support an existing renewable energy and energy efficiency center in West Africa and to set up three more centers in East and southern African.
The Ecowas Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), located in Cape Verde, will see more funds to help it deal with the rapidly growing project portfolio and expanding services. The two new centers in sub-Saharan Africa will be modeled off of ECREEE. One will be established, together with the East African Community, to serve Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda; and the other will serve the 15 members of the Southern Africa Development Community. Both are expected to be fully operational in 2014.
