The beginning of 2014 will see Liberia commencing a mini-hydro pilot project in Suakoko with the help of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), USAID, and Winrock International/LESSP.
UNIDO country representative Bafotigui Sako said looking at the energy access in the country, the data presents Liberia’s electrification situation at about 10% of urban residents and less than 2% of rural Liberians with access to electricity; and that there is no generation capacity outside the capital city except for a handful of privately-owned generators and scattered donor-funded pilot projects. He added that the country has one of the highest amounts of renewable water resources per inhabitant in the continent although only 4 MW have been brought online.
The project will support the commercialized development of renewable micro and mini hydropower installations becoming a catalyst for other renewable energy technologies like biomass and solar power.
