US and South Africa Vie for World’s Largest Solar Farm

The US and South Africa are racing to be the first to complete the world’s largest solar farms. Who will win? Both.

The US will have its 1 GW plant come online first as the Department of Interior gave Solar Millennium the final approval for its solar project planned for Blythe, California. It is expected to cover 7,000 acres and provide energy for up to 750,000 homes.

The US’ title of hosting the world’s largest solar farm might be short-lived if South Africa completes plans for a £18.4 billion project that will provide 5 GW of electricity. Up to 200 investors are expected to meet this week to hear the government’s plans which would see solar plants covering 9,000 hectares in the Northern Cape.
