Majority owned by Vodafone, one of Africa’s largest communication groups began using fuel cells throughout South Africa. Vodacom deployed 89 fuel cells at base stations in the country in 2010 to increase reliability, decrease operational costs, and reduce emissions.
Its base station in Baviaanspoort, a remote location on the outskirts of Pretoria, was one of the locations to deploy Idatech’s ElectraGen™ ME 5 kW system which includes a fuel reformer that converts methanol and water liquid fuel into hydrogen gas to power the unit. Vodacom said that the Baviaaspoort site yielded significant savings in terms of maintenance and repair costs with improved reliability.
