The World Bank approved a $132-million, zero-interest loan to help Cameroon advance its hydropower sector with the Lom Pangar hydropower project. Located on the Sanaga River, it is expected that the proposed dam will increase the West African nation’s electricity generation by 40%.
The project is expected to cost $494 million with other financiers including the African Development Bank (AfDB), Central African States Development Bank, European Investment Bank (EIB), and the French Development Agency (AFD) supplying $163 and the Cameroonian government adding another $199 million. The country is estimated to have the potential to generate close to 23 GW of power via hydro sources.
