World Future Council’s AREA Workshop Fast Approaching

Release

Electrification rates in rural Sub Saharan Africa are still only 8 %. This forces many Africans to spend up to 70% of their household income on energy. Increasing electrification rates is thus an indispensable element in the strife to reduce poverty. In this context 30 African decision-makers, industry and NGO representatives will meet to discuss sustainable solutions during a strategy workshop on ‘Renewable Energy Policies for Sustainable African Development’.

As part of this workshop the World Future Council will initiate the ‘African Renewable Energy Alliance’ (AREA). The purpose of the alliance is to work towards continuous energy policy development and its implementation in African countries.

The event will be conducted under the patronage of Right Livelihood Award winner Dr. Tewolde Gebre Berhan Egziabher, Director General of the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority and member of the World Future Council.

When: Saturday 10th October 2009; 4:30pm Inauguration

Where: Dreamliner Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

A closing reception following the inauguration will allow time to interview participants, including representatives from the African Union as well as Nigerian, South African and Ethiopian guests.
