Ontario has received the world’s largest working photovoltaic (PV) farm operated by Arizona-based First Solar Inc. Partnered for the project, Calgary-based energy and pipeline giant Enbridge Inc. said the Sarnia solar farm will feed 80 MW of solar power into Ontario’s electricity grid with panels spread over 950 acres of land with power to be sold to the Ontario Power Authority under a 20-year contract.
The Sarnia project will be able to electrify 12,800 homes at full capacity, according to Enbridge. "Enbridge intends to stabilize our environmental footprint at 2009 levels under a program that includes a commitment to generate a kilowatt of renewable energy for every kilowatt of power our operations consume," said company spokesman Al Monaco. "We will achieve this goal through projects like the Sarnia solar project."
