World’s Most Economical Solar Light in Africa

African nations seem to be the prime places to jump start various renewable energy technologies, but high costs undermine its potential on the continent. However, start-up company Nokero International Ltd. has made its mission to create affordable solar lighting for developing countries.

The company claims that its Nokero N200 solar light provides the “perfect balance between quality and affordability” and it is reaching Africa. A new video short from Emmy-nominated John Mans highlighted these concepts by showcasing the benefits of Nokero’s solar power in Africa. Mans with filmmakers Andi Lucas and Melinda MacInnis traveled to Swaziland with 48 Nokero solar light bulbs.

The delivery near the Mlilwane Game Reserve saw bulbs being given to town leaders during an inter-park dance competition and also to game rangers trying to protect endangered animals. The lights are very beneficial to the parks, helping rangers track poachers and make for easier navigation.

Nokero, short for No Kerosene, was formed one year ago by Steve Katsaros to develop safe and environmentally-friendly solar products that are also affordable for lower income countries. “From solar panels, to batteries, to LEDs, a whole host of technologies have reached the tipping point, to where we can now bring renewable technologies to the developing world in a truly viable way,” said Katsaros.
