Zambia Negotiating for Power Imports

Zambia is looking to import power from South Africa and is currently in talks with the South African government for the importation of 300 MW of electricity, according to the country’s Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa.

The import could lead to an increase in the cost of electricity. "The transfer prices may be twice the amount, because currently we pay half of what we are supposed to pay for electricity," warned Nkhuwa.

The country is currently experiencing an energy deficit of more than 750 MW because of the drastic drop in performance of the Kariba dam, which supplies nearly 900 MW of electricity. Negotiations are also underway with Mozambique to increase the amount of electricity available in the country.
