Zambia has received $100,000 from the United Nations Climate Adaptation Fund (AF) to implement the country’s National Adaptation Action Plan (NAPA) launched last year by Michael Kaingu, Minister of Tourism, Environment and National Resources.
The Minister said the climate adaptation fund would enhance Zambia’s efforts for developing programs that cover sectors such as agriculture, water, forestry, wildlife, and health. NAPA will also attempt to further educate Zambian residents on the effects of energy consumption and other factors that are believed to point to climate change.
The AF was established by the participants in the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to finance adaptation projects and programs in developing countries. The AF will be financed with 2% of the Certified Emission Reduction issued for projects of the Clean Development Mechanism with funds from other sources.
