The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $18-million loan to the Zambian government for the equity shares of the Zambia Electricity Supply Co. (Zesco) to develop the Itezhi-Tezhi hydropower plant.
The 120-MW project, to be located on the Kafue River, will be implemented by Itezhi-Tezhi Power Corp. (ITPC), a 50/50 JV between Tata Africa and Zesco. Hela Cheikhrouhou, Director of AfDB Energy, Environment and Climate Change department, said: "The AfDB approaches this project as an integrated PPP, as our institution is uniquely positioned to provide both private and public financing, which will reduce the risk of funding gaps and timeline mismatches for the implementation of the power station and the transmission line."
