The Zambian government recently announced that it would boost the country’s power generating capacity by 1,080 MW, up from its current total power generation of 1,400 MW. The additional capacity will come from the rehabilitation of the Kafue Gorge Lower the Ithezi Thezi power project, Lunzuwa and Lusiwasi power extension projects, and the Kariba North Bank Extension project.
In addition, the Copperbelt Energy Corp. (CEC) has called on engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors to begin expressing interest for the 40 MW Kabompo Gorge hydro project. CEC said the project would cost around $120 million with it set to be complete by 2015. The utility called on EPC contractors or turnkey construction providers to submit expressions of interest by November 19 with bids expected to be issued by March.
