Zambia’s HydroPower Station Receives Support from India

 Funding for the upgrade to the Itezhi-Tezhi hydro power station in Zambia, by the Exim Bank of India, was reported to have received favorable attention and would soon be approved, according to Indian High Commissioner to Zambia, River Wallang.

The upgrade project is expected to boost the power of the station’s generation capacity by about 120 megawatts (MW) of electricity and would cover a 350-kilometer transmission line to the national grid.

Zesco and Tata Africa Holdings constructed the $150 million hydropower plant, located on the Kafue river, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) back in November 2006.

Mr Wallang stated that the Indian government fully supports President Mwanawasa and the Zambian government’s efforts to ensuring the continuous development of the country’s energy sector along with improving the lifestyles of its people.

President Mwanawasa announced that the Government recently entered into an investment partnership with Tata Zambia, in which the giant manufacturing company would open new industries in the country’s agricultural, mining, and hydro-electricity power sectors.
