Zimbabwe’s state utility, the Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company (ZETDC), in an effort to boost supplies to the energy-starved grid, has invited private solar rooftop energy producers to contribute to the grid through a net metering program.
From its Twitter account, ZETDC said any existing customer producing solar energy on their premises can feed excess power back into the ZETDC network through a grid-tied inverter and smart meter which measures both power used by the consumer and power supplied to the grid. The producers will be paid in electrical unit credits deducted from their household bills, not cash payments.
In related news, ZETDC) has reportedly launched a tender for a number of solar photovoltaic power plants to produce 500 MWp. According to Reuters reporting, the company has just launched a call for tenders for the construction of several photovoltaic solar power stations for a total 500 MW which will be connected to the national electricity network.
