Due to a drop in water levels in Ethiopia, the country has started to ration electricity for domestic and industrial customers.  Minister for Water and Electricity, Seleshi Bekele, said the drop in water levels at the country’s Gibe 3 dam had led to a deficit of 476 MW.

Speaking at a news conference, Seleshi that the deficit was more than one-third of the country’s electricity generation of 1,400 MW.

In addition to rationing domestic supplies Ethiopia has also suspended electricity exports to neighboring Djibouti and Sudan.

The rationing program will run until July.
