SAPVIA (the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association) would like to congratulate Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi on her ministerial appointment to the Energy portfolio. We look forward to engaging with the new Minister and her team around how to give effect to the transformation of the energy sector and the role that solar PV can play in this journey.
The role of energy provision, from both a technical, environmental and socio-economic delivery perspective, has become increasingly contested in South Africa over the last few years. The historical predominance of Eskom and coal-fired power is being challenged by the global and local rise in the deployment of renewable energy. Renewable Energy now offers competitive economics, sustainable job creation, and is also able to make an immediate contribution to the country’s commitments toward climate change mitigation and water management. The Renewable Energy IPP Procurement (REIPPP) program has demonstrated over the last four years how the Department of Energy and the private sector can play a constructive role in the delivery of electricity, jobs and socio-economic benefits. There are valuable lessons learned that can only further enhance delivery of these benefits. In addition, the “silent revolution” going on in the rooftop solar PV sector in South Africa is creating a whole new sector for SMME development and manufacturing in the country.
